A short story of the American Civil War
I wrote this story while staying in New Orleans in 2001. My father was a student of the American Civil War so I had been brought up on a credo of "The south will rise again..." (Not bad for an Englishman!). After a tour of the ante-bellum plantations along the Mississippi and drinking in the atmosphere of the French Quarter I had a head full of history. As I was sharing a room with a virtual stranger and suffering badly from jet lag, I scribbled this story down while sitting on the edge of a bath in my hotel room at 2.00am. If the house in my story bears a strong resemblance to the beautiful Oak Alley (pictured)... that is no coincidence!
